Britain freezes UK assets of Gadhafi and family

LONDON (AP) -- Britain on Sunday froze the U.K.-based assets of Libyan ruler Moammar Gadhafi, members of his family and their representatives in accordance with U.N. sanctions imposed on Libya.


Those affected include Gadhafi's four sons and one daughter, the Foreign Office said.


"I decided to implement this UN resolution in the U.K. as quickly as possible, before the financial markets reopened," Treasury chief George Osborne said. "This is a strong message for the Libyan regime that violence against its own people is not acceptable."

London Trial of Wikileaks Founder Adjourned

Lawyers for WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange are trying to prevent his extradition to Sweden for questioning on allegations of sex crimes. They claim he will not get a fair trial in Sweden. The trial has adjourned until February 24.


The extradition hearing for Julian Assange lasted three days. Extradition experts say that's unusual in itself.


Sweden has requested the extradition of the WikiLeaks founder in connection with allegations of sexual misconduct.


The defense for Assange has said the sex in question was consensual and that the charges are politically motivated.

Experts Warn of 'Death by GPS' as More People Visit Remote Wildernesses

Navigation aides are leading many astray -- with deadly results.


Our country's remote wildernesses have long called naturalists with their beauty and danger. And that includes the hazards of the remotest regions, said Death Valley wilderness coordinator Charlie Callagan.


"It's what I'm beginning to call death by GPS," Callagan told the Sacramento Bee. "People are renting vehicles with GPS and they have no idea how it works -- and they are willing to trust the GPS to lead them into the middle of nowhere."

Police: Train collision in Germany kills 10

(CNN) -- Ten people were killed and 43 were injured, 18 seriously, when two trains collided in eastern Germany late Saturday, a Magdeburg Police spokesman said.


The crash between a regional HarzElbeExpress passenger train and a freight train occurred less than two miles from the nearby town of Oschersleben shortly after 10:30 p.m. local time.


Portions of the train burned in the snow for about two hours.
